Printing Beyond Categories: Fabric as a Canvas for Art

At Soundarya Digital Fabric Prints, we’re always excited to take on unique projects that push the boundaries of digital fabric printing. One such memorable experience was our collaboration with The Real Elephant Collective, an initiative close to nature and even closer to our hearts.

When the Collective approached us, their vision was as bold as it was beautiful: to create a life-sized fabric garment for an elephant, crafted from digitally printed artwork rich in colour, detail, and cultural significance. Their design was to be draped over a real elephant as part of a striking outdoor installation, a moving piece of art.

From Concept to Cloth

The design they shared with us was nothing short of spectacular. Intricate motifs, an explosion of colour, and a sense of wild, free-spirited energy. But translating that onto fabric at a scale of 8 feet wide was no small feat.

We began with what we believe is the most important step in any project understanding the client's vision. After studying the design in depth, we guided them through the fabric selection process. Based on the requirements for durability, vibrancy, and outdoor display, we suggested a Cotton Satin base for the print to ensure maximum colour richness, and Cotton Canvas as an inner layer to add weight and structure allowing the fabric to withstand wind when draped on the elephant outdoors.

To help visualize the outcome, we began with a 2-meter printed sample. When the client received it, her response reaffirmed our approach:

"I’m extremely happy with the clarity and the colours of the design on the fabric. I haven’t been able to achieve this with other vendors."

With her approval, we moved confidently into production.

The Finishing Touches: Handmade Tassels and Heartfelt Details

Beyond printing, the Collective requested handmade tassels to be stitched to the ends of the fabric blanket. This personal, artisanal touch added both beauty and cultural authenticity to the piece.

Our in-house team got to work over 100 tassels, crafted and hand-stitched with care, and completed the artwork. Every knot was a testament to the blend of technology and handwork we proudly offer at Soundarya.

Art, Collaboration, and Trust

What made this project so special wasn't just the size or the intricacy, it was the collaborative process. From sampling and design refinement to fabric choice and custom finishes, we worked closely with the Collective every step of the way. We shared suggestions, made timely adjustments, and ensured the final product was delivered on schedule.

Beyond Fabric

The client, thrilled with the result, later ordered custom shawls using the same stunning animal print artwork turning their vision into wearable art.

This project is a shining example of how fabric printing is not limited to garments or home furnishing. At Soundarya Digital Fabric Prints, we treat fabric as a canvas for expression.
